It is a beautifully restored, spacious house with extensive views of the surrounding hills, fields of olive and almond trees and down across the Almanzora Valley with its orange and lemon groves and traditional white houses to the mountains beyond. It is in a peaceful village setting just half a mile from the nearest bar/restaurant and shop and about 10 minutes from the town of Albox where there are supermarkets, shops, a market and bars. |

A gazebo provides shelter for outdoor eating next to the beautifully tiled, Roman-style 8 x 4 metre swimming pool, with shower (picture links at the top). Several outdoor tables, chairs and sun loungers are also provided. Off road parking is available for several cars. The house has central heating for use during the coldest winter months.
The house is about 30 minutes away from the coast at Mojacar with its atmospheric white Moorish hill top town set above several miles of sandy beaches, bars, restaurants and shops.
The Cabo de Gata Natural Park(less than 1 hr. south) is an unspoilt area of white villages, rocky coves, sandy beaches and miles of footpaths. The salt pans are some of the most important wetland areas in Spain for breeding birds and migrants.
Other visits include Nijar (hilltop village -rugs and pottery), Mini Hollywood near Tabernas - the desert film setting for "A Fistful of Dollars" and other spaghetti westerns (about 1 hour.) and local caves. Granada, final stronghold of the Moors, with its exquisite Alhambra Palace and gardens is about 2 hours away. Close by is the Sierra Nevada National Park with Spain's highest peaks, and just to the south are the Alpujarras, an area of hills, wooded valleys and white villages.
Activities in the local area include bird watching, walking, mountain biking, horse riding, golf, tennis, swimming, wind surfing, scuba diving ,jet skiing or just relaxing round the pool. This is the driest/sunniest part of Spain so the weather is hot in July and August.
For more about the area, see this website, about the Almeria region, especially the Picture Gallery. There is also some useful information here (select Destination Guides, then Spain, then Mojacar). For a sketch map, see Multimap (Albox is just right of centre)
Budget airlines fly into Alicante (Easyjet), Murcia (Ryanair) and Almeria (Easyjet). A car is essential for this holiday, but they are cheap to hire.
